#4 Notre Dame (10-0) defeats Boston College (2-8,1-5): 21-6 in Alumni Stadium
Boston College may be unranked with just 2 wins, but that wasn’t going to stop Notre Dame fans from worrying about this game and remembering 1993. Nineteen years ago, the Irish faced BC at home and were just coming off the game of the century. The previous week 100,000 fans arrived on a campus of about 10,000 to witness #2 Notre Dame take on #1 Florida State. Notre Dame defeated FSU and controlled their destiny of winning a national championship. Below is a picture taken from the last play of the game as Irish fans watched Shawn Wooden bat down Charlie Ward‘s last chance to get FSU in the end zone.
In the end that play and that game didn’t matter because the following week, on November 20, 1993, the #1 ranked Irish fell to #17 Boston College, inexplicably. So while this game might not meant much to the casual college football fan, it meant a lot to Notre Dame. And luckily for the Irish, they did not lose this Holy War battle.
It’s no surprise that BC’s 118th ranked rushing offense managed a total of just 53 net yards. And their 116th ranked rushing defense allowed ND to gain 184 yards on the ground. The Irish were a little sloppy though, with two turnovers and 8 penalties for 65 yards. But Manti Te’o came up with his 6th interception of the season (only one player in FBS has more). And Notre Dame now has the #1 ranked scoring defense in the nation.
Notre Dame is 10-0 for the first time since 1993 and is ranked 3rd in the latest BCS standings, with less that .03 of a point separating the top three: Oregon, Kansas State and the Irish.
